The Invitation for The Estate Concert

Visited by distinguished guests from around the world, and built in 1928, The Bitar Estate was designed by Herman Brookman. This ornate Mediterranean home in the Western US boasts twenty rooms. The home is graciously adorned with fine works of art including French vases from the Napoleonic period, Tiffany lamps, Chinese vases, Baccarat chandeliers, and beautiful craftsmanship.

A dramatic spiral staircase with ornate bronze railing was designed by German artists and the ceilings in many of the rooms are 24K gold, as are paneled walls retaining their original paint, which was mixed with gold.

The home boasts one of six antique electric Steinway pianos made in the US, with a walnut cabinet hand-carved in Italy. Equally impressive are the planned and meticulously maintained gardens that adorn the grounds, reminiscent of an Italian villa. This is the home of the late Mr. Bitar, named by President Eisenhower, the honorary consul of Lebanon.

What do opera and children have in common?

Most people if asked the question would think there was nothing in common at all. This too, is what I thought, until I met the wonderful people at Portland Opera. Under the very capable leadership of Robert Bailey, Portland Opera for years has used their Educational and Outreach Programs all over the Pacific Northwest in schools and classrooms exposing this wonderful art form to children.

Last year alone, over 80,000 children experienced the colorful world of opera, thanks to Portland Opera's commitment to the community. In one recent opera production, Portland Opera even brought children in to design the sets that were used in that production.

Portland Opera has demonstrated the relevance of its mission and vision by being a true partner in the community.

In sharing with children and in inviting children to participate in productions, Portland Opera stands in my mind as one the great arts organizations in the US today.
